Critique Your Painting

Jan 11, 2022

I have a Facebook group of over 500 artists called CHROMA Community.  Members post their work and we encourage each other and offer suggestions.  I always comment on painting posts from members. I look for things that stand out to me as being done really well. I want to let the artist know they are on the right track.  If they ask, I will also offer positive feedback for improvement.  A teacher’s perspective is generally helpful but most helpful to the beginning student until they develop a quiet confidence in their own abilities. The best way for the student to do this is to continually upgrade their art skills and pursue higher standards of personal excellence. In other words, always be learning. Always. No matter if you are a beginner or a professional artist.  New knowledge (about anything, not just art) will help your painting skills and be a source of inspiration.

Right now I’m working on developing more ways to help evolving artists keep learning and continue to build their quiet confidence and artistic independence. How about something that will give you a review of all your artist skills in action?

A painting critique checklist can help in the following ways:

  • It will help if you are stuck and don’t know where to go next.
  • It will help you if think you are done with a painting…or close to it.
  • It will help you stay constructive, positive and critique your work objectively
  • It will help you learn what areas you need to be focusing your attention next
  • It will help develop your thought process while painting

It is not a step-by-step list, end all, be all or must-do list, just a tool to help you remember the benefits of using the elements and principles of art in your painting. It is food for thought.
