Unpacking Genius

Dec 04, 2021

This quote is attributed to Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot. She was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.

I agree with her quote. But what is genius?

Genius is defined as exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability.

So, to combine Ms. Evans' quote with the definition of the word, I will say,

Exceptional creativity can be acquired by those who are willing to discipline themselves on a path toward learning.

As they used to say when I taught elementary school, “Let’s unpack this sentence.”

Exceptional creativity may mean any of these things and more:

Thinking more creatively

Living more creatively

Becoming a better artist/painter

Confidently producing art

Having "natural" ability

Producing magic

Can be acquired can also mean:

You can do it

You can learn

Belief in your capacity

Open to possibilities

Striving to be a better self

 Willing to discipline can mean:

Focus

Commitment (of time & energy)

Structure & process

Starting a routine

Practice

 Learning can mean:

Seeking out instruction

Skill-building

Acquiring new ideas & methods

All designed to help you get to your goal of _____________( insert your desired form of exceptional creativity)

Creativity is a skill that can be cultivated. It is a skill than can be acquired at any age.
